My First Soccer Game

Tonight was the teachers’ soccer game, an “optional” event designed to raise morale among the teachers across town and give them a chance to relax. Kory was drafted onto his school’s team and spent the evening across town.
I went to night school, as usual on Monday nights, and dropped by our school’s game afterward to be seen, planning to cheer briefly, then drop some excuse and go home early. However, the team captain also happens to be our across-the-hall neighbor, and he was short two players. So I and one other female English teacher ended up lined up, wearing jerseys, on the otherwise all-male team to play soccer.
Let’s keep in mind that I have only seen three soccer games before in my life and had never physically kicked a soccer ball until tonight.
I got subbed in for the last 10 minutes of the 40-minute game, almost made a goal (my shot bounced off the post), and remembered why I hated cross-country in high school.
It was fun to run around, but I had no idea what I was doing. My strategy was pretty much to get in the way of the other team as much as possible and get out of the way of our star player (the team captain). I got really winded, but I was faster than a lot of people out there simply by virtue of being younger. I was glad I’ve been going to the gym, or I would have been dead!
I hope they don’t make me play again next week, but I am awarding myself a “gym” sticker for the night’s efforts. Now it’s time to settle back with a cup of tea and do some Nanowrimo.
