Begin Countdown

// January 20th, 2010 // Uncategorized

As you may have read on Kory’s blog, it’s now official. We have turned in our re-contracting forms with a big circle around the “No.”

One of my neighbors here in the teacher room overheard me discussing it with the vice-principal (through translation by my supervisor), and she exclaimed (after the vice-principal left) how sad she was. It’s true. I will be sad to leave. The countdown on my iPhone says we have 186 days left - though of course that’s an estimate based on our contract date, not the actual (and as of yet unknown) flight date. It’s hard to picture myself back in a place that speaks English, where we don’t have to speak slowly, where we absorb every piece of information automatically instead of having to puzzle it out. Where ramen, sushi, and karaoke are not so easily accessible. Where we go to Chili’s instead of Don Don when we don’t want to cook. Where we have a car.

I’m sending off my applications for grad schools, but we won’t know if I get in or where until later. We’ll probably do a tour of family and friends when we get back, before setting off for [unknown location]. We’re looking forward to seeing all of you! But in the meantime, I’m trying to enjoy all 186 days I have left.

    Yes, it will be sad, but WE will be happy. So many things you’ll miss and so many memories made. And so many experiences that will never leave you. Good stuff.

    We will be so glad to see you again. Where are you sending grad school applications?

    Ditto what your mom said. The time you spent in Japan will always be a wonderful memory for you. And, who knows, you might get to go visit your children there someday.

    Bittersweet realization! And the time will fly faster than you can imagine. Don’t try to get in every last unexplored experience possible, though, or you’ll go crazy. Save something for another time!
